Aplicação de luz UV-C 222 nm como estratégia para o controlo da biodeterioração em espécimes preservados em líquido

As coleções biológicas são repositórios para armazenar registos de biodiversidade. Os processos de biodeterioração a que os espécimes estão expostos representam uma perda de informação; por isso, é crucial avaliar tratamentos para mitigar estes danos. Este estudo avaliou a aplicação de luz UV-C 222 nm como estratégia para controlar a biodeterioração microbiana em espécimes de uma coleção zoológica na Colômbia. Para tal, os microrganismos presentes na superfície dos espécimes foram isolados e identificados por amplificação do gene 16S rDNA e coloração de Gram. Para avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana, os microrganismos foram colocados em esferas de vidro expostas a diferentes tempos de irradiação com luz UV-C 222 nm. Os resultados mostraram uma inibição de até 99,68 % nas espécies de Bacillus. Estes achados apoiam o uso de luz UV-C 222 nm como alternativa para mitigar a biodeterioração em coleções preservadas em líquido.
