Abstract

Biological collections are repositories for storing biodiversity records. The biodeterioration processes to which specimens are exposed represent a loss of information; therefore, it is crucial to evaluate treatments to mitigate this damage. This study assessed the application of 222 nm UV-C light as a strategy for controlling microbial biodeterioration in specimens from a zoological collection in Colombia. To this end, microorganisms present on the surface of specimens were isolated and identified by 16S rDNA gene amplification and Gram staining. To evaluate antimicrobial activity, microorganisms were placed on glass beads exposed to different irradiation times with 222 nm UV-C light. The results showed an inhibition of up to 99.68 % in Bacillus species. These findings support the use of 222 nm UV-C light as an alternative to mitigate biodeterioration in collections preserved in liquid.
